The former WGCF and currently named Wondo Genet College of Forestry & Natural Resources is the only Forestry college in Ethiopia and a constituent of Hawassa University to deal with Forestry and Natural Resources issues through formal education providing B.Sc. and M.SC level of training. A library and information system is a backbone of any academic and research exercise. Obviously, The Library system is one of the functional units of the college that is responsible for the provision of library and information services to the students and the teaching and administrative staff and researchers to enable them to ta attain their learning, teaching and research objectives.

While the general objective of the college library is to serve the instructional and research functions of the college as aforementioned above its specific objectives include:

  • To render library and information services that can meet the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students in relation to the approved curricula.
  • To assist the teaching staff in the preparation of teaching materials and in keeping up-to-date in the respective subject of fields.
  • To provide general reference and lending service to the college community as a whole.

I have served being a Head Librarian at Wondo Genet College of Forestry before 16 years together with my colleagues Mr. Hasso Yasu – an Intermediate Librarian and Ms. Junko Soderman a Consultant Librarian from SLU for the Institutional Development of WGCF, based upon five terms of reference/mission:

  1. Strengthen and make functional the graduate students reading room.
  2. Strengthen the existing library services
  3. Collect and establishing the digital library service
  4. Establish interlibrary links in the country with other higher institutions and at abroad with SLU and ICRAF
  5. Explore the possibilities of expanding the library services and advice to the management body of the college.

Even though at that time in Ethiopia automation of College and University Libraries was at an infancy age, WGCF library was one of the first automated library systems in Ethiopia. The WGCF library was using WIN/ISIS software for a formation of its bibliographic resources and is assisted by experts those have background and experience in the application ICT and that advice on national systems and work in the National Science and Technology center of Ethiopia.

The Current Status

Academic libraries need to serve its customers with up-to-date information technology services to cope with the competitive world. There has been an increase in the number of joining in academic programmes of WGCF & Natural Resources due to the opening of new faculties or schools in addition to forestry during the last years and this trend is set to continue in the future too, henceforth, the college has already built a new library building so as to expand an accommodation capacity of the library.

In order to satisfy the needs of the students, the teaching staff & researchers and be able to give them an efficient library service it is imperative to organize and administer universities and college libraries in the light of modern trends of Library & Information Science.

The level of financial commitment in terms of books, Electronic journals subscription or acquisition, information handling equipment,  training and upgrading library staff and so on, needs great attention throughout all Hawassa University Libraries.
