Last Call: AAAS-TWAS Science Diplomacy Course (Deadline: 20 April 2022)

Dear supporters and friends of the UN Technology Bank for LDCs,

I hope this email finds you well. We are writing to remind you the deadline for applying for the Course on Science Diplomacy, co-organized by our partner TWAS and AAAS, is approaching, on 20 April 2022.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Washington DC, USA, and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Trieste, Italy, are seeking candidates to participate in the eighth annual summer course on science diplomacy to be held from 25 July to 3 August 2022.

The AAAS-TWAS Science Diplomacy training programme was established in 2014 to expose scientists, policymakers, diplomats and other interested stakeholders and institutions to concepts of science diplomacy, explore key contemporary international policy issues relating to science, technology, environment and health, and build a skillset to allow for careers at the intersection of science and diplomacy.

To strengthen the connection between scientists and governmental officials, policymakers and diplomats, applications to attend the course are being invited from ‘participant pairs’ (one scientist and one applicant from the policy making arena). Both participants in the participant pair should be living and/or working in the same country.

Applicants from the 46 Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are especially encouraged to apply and will be given priority.

Introduction to Afaan Oromo for {Kids /AOK -Level 1 } and {Adults / AOA – Level 2}

Afaan Oromoo, an Afroasiatic language belonging to the Cushitic branch, is spoken predominantly by the Oromo people and neighboring ethnic groups in the Horn of Africa. About 85% of Oromo speakers live in Ethiopia, mainly in the Oromia region. Afaan Oromoo is the most widely spoken language in Ethiopia, the most commonly spoken Cushitic language, and the fourth most widely spoken language in Africa after Arabic, Hausa, and Swahili. It is expressed as a first language by more than 40 million Oromo people in Ethiopia and more than half-million northern and eastern Kenya. A smaller number of immigrants also speak it in other African countries such as South Africa, Uganda, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, and Tanzania. Besides first language speakers, significant members of different ethnicities in contact with the Oromo speak it as a second language, for instance, the Omotic-speaking Bambassi and the Nilo-Saharan-speaking Kwama in northwestern Oromia. Afaan Oromoo serves as the official working language of the Oromia, Harar, and Dire Dawa regional states and of the Oromia Zone in the Amhara Region. It is a language of primary education in Oromia, Harar, Dire Dawa, Benishangul-Gumuz, and Addis Ababa, and the Oromia Zone in the Amhara region.
